Workshops
Information about our past and future workshops:
Attenuated Vaccines
9 June 2011, Nairobi, Kenya
Theoretical lectures were conducted as follows:
-Dirk Geysen: FRET-PCR assay for Theileriosis
-Andrew Tait: Molecular characterization of T. annulata and other cattle parasites
-Erich Zweygarth: In vitro parasite cultivation
-Susan Tschitschmann: Attenuation markers
-Richard Bishop: Immunization against East Coast Fever using infection and treatment method (ITM)
-Ulrike Seitzer: Rapid tests for the detection of T. annulata infection, including LAMP and immunochromatographic strip test
Technical Workshop on Diagnostic Tools
13-16 November 2011, Khartoum, Sudan
Students were trained in modern laboratory diagnostic techniques such as PCR, LAMP, ELISA and LFD.
Technical Workshop on Bioinformatics
9-15 March 2012, Borstel, Germany
Participants supervised by senior scientists from Germany, Sudan and South Africa. Content of the workshop included:
-Introduction to the NCBI website and BLAST searching databases, sequence formats, searches
-Bioinformatics in daily laboratory work – from primer design to sequence analysis
-Sequence alignment and phylogeny
-Proteomic tools useful for predicting immunologically relevant proteins
-Discussion of problems/questions/applications brought forward by the participants
Tissue culture of Theileria annulata
10-14 September 2012, Assiut, Egypt
This workshop provided training in:
-Aspects of tick collection and identification
-Aspects of tick handling and establishing and maintaining of tick colonies
-Isolation of Theileria from the salivary glands of ticks
-Establishment and maintenance of Theileria-infected host cells.
Introduction to the epidemiology tool box
22-25 April 2013, Berlin, Germany
Workshop to provide background and understanding of epidemiological language, terms, concepts of surveillance and their application. Included hands-on experience with use of software: data entry, sorting, tabulation, descriptive and analytical tools
Assessment of Immunization Trials
6 November 2014, Berlin, Germany
This workshop was used to strengthen the capacity of partner institutions to conduct vaccine studies with adherence to GCP guidelines and bioethical standards. The workshop covered the following areas: (i) bioethical standards in vaccination trials, (ii) designing vaccination trials, (iii) phases and stages of immunization trials, (iv) risk assessment.
Epidemiology: Geospacial and geotemporal analysis in disease surveillance
1-3 September 2016, Berlin, Germany
To provide background and understanding of epidemiological language, terms, concepts of surveillance and their application; analysis and illustrations of disease distributions. Included hands-on experience with use of epidemiological and GIS software: data entry, sorting, tabulation, descriptive and analytical tools
